Florida-born Bear McCreary has been involved in projects like Battlestar Galactica, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Caprica, Human Target and The Walking Dead since its inception. Human Target granted him his first Emmy nomination for the series Main Title.

McCreary has a very unusual style for a television composer; he tends to be more cinematic and expansive, even though, constraints of timetable would tell him he should craft smaller themes in order to develop a rather more fluid narrative point of view. On Blood & Chrome score, created for another BSG‘s spin-off,  there is a variety of sounds that reminisce Blade Runner and Skyfall.

The percussions are blunt and engaging, moving the story forward and provocatively telling the listener to follow it all along if he/she dares, something like the ones used on Terminator II by Brad Fiedel. The flutes play an important role as well to bring a sense of longing for home and wilderness, especially because they tend to be mixed up with Eastern music characteristics. Furthermore, discovery is an important aspect and the flutes on this score are essentially conveying.

By far, the most outstanding track is “Archeron”. It starts as a simple string piece with thriller-ish overtones and evolves to a fast paced electro sound mixing Eastern influences and Hans Zimmer-alike momentums. The percussions strikes back again but now the guitars are loud and open; they are also there as a counterpoint to the Eastern themes that are layered up in front of the track, whilst  the guitars maintain the background with the strings. The bass on this track, although quite discreet, keeps the beat going almost inconspicuously in such a way that will be necessary to listen three or four times to understand the point.

To conclude, in a matter of short-time, Bear McCreary is becoming a household name in the Score Composer community. Not only for television shows but also for cinema, which is where he belongs.
