HOWARD SHORE’S ‘SOUL OF THE ULTIMATE NATION’

Music By Academy Award® Winner Howard Shore
Collector’s Edition Vol. 2

(June 26, 2012—New York, NY) Howe Records is pleased to announce the release of the Soul of the Ultimate Nation (SUN) Collectors Edition Vol. 2 available in stores and digitally on July 10, 2012.

The epic online fantasy game Soul of the Ultimate Nation (SUN) has been enjoyed by fans around the world, but the soundtrack had only been released in parts of Asia. Now for the first time, as the second in a Collector’s Edition series of the Composer’s work, Howard Shore’s original score for SUN is available to a worldwide audience.

During the time that Shore was writing the score for SUN he was at the Kremlin in Moscow conducting performances of The Lord of the Rings Symphony with the National Philharmonic of Russia and Victor Popov’s Academy of Choral Arts. Further concert engagements took him to Tokyo with these ensembles.

“While in Japan, I decided I wanted to write the piece specifically for this orchestra and chorus,” said Shore. “I wanted the chorus to sing in ancient Korean as a way to express the world of SUN. It seemed like the perfect opportunity to bring together the western and eastern concepts at play. The pieces were composed as tone poems to express the different characters, cultures and the world of this wonderfully detailed game.”

Howard Shore is among today’s most respected, honored, and active composers and conductors. His work with Peter Jackson on The Lord of the Rings trilogy stands as his most towering achievement to date, earning him three Oscars® and four Grammy® awards. Since 2003 Shore’s music from the beloved trilogy has been constantly performed in concert halls around the world.

Shore’s on-going collaboration with filmmaker David Cronenberg has spawned scores for 14 films, including The Fly, Dead Ringers, Crash, Naked Lunch, Eastern Promises, A Dangerous Method and Cosmopolis. Shore continues to distinguish himself with a wide range of projects, from Martin Scorsese’s The Departed, The Aviator, and Gangs of New York, to Ed Wood, The Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia, and Mrs. Doubtfire. He is currently working on his second opera, and is returning to Middle-earth with J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit.

Howe Records recently released Howard Shore’s Academy Award® nominated score for Hugo, and a live recording of The Lord of the Rings Symphony, which spent many weeks on Billboard’s classical album charts. On July 10th, Howe Records will also release the Soundtrack for David Cronenberg’s upcoming drama Cosmopolis.

Soul of the Ultimate Nation, Collectors Edition Vol. 2 from Howe Records will be available in stores and digitally on July 10, 2012.

GERARD MARINO SCORES ‘THE AMAZING SPIDER MAN’ GAME

Marino Receives HMMA Nomination for Best Video Game Score for Spider-Man
(West Hollywood, CA) June 19, 2012— Award winning video game composer Gerard Marino scores Marvel’s The Amazing Spider-Man for PlayStation, Wii, Nintendo, and Xbox available June 26, 2012. Marino has just received an HMMA Award Nomination for Best Video Game Score for Spider-Man. The HMMA Awards ceremony will be held in November in Hollywood, CA. Marino is best known for composing PlayStation’s God of War series. His theme from God of War debuted at the Los Angeles Philharmonic and is played around the world. His recent credits include Spider-Man: Edge of Time and DC Universe Online.
The Amazing Spider-Man video game is a continuation of Columbia’s film, following Peter Parker as he fights Dr. Otto Octavius’s army of robots in Manhattan. Using real-time navigational and combat choices, players fight crime using free-roaming and web-slinging gameplay. Gerard Marino stated, “I created three original themes surrounding the major personalities in the game. I created chaotic environments using metallic and electronic sounds with guitar, drums, and strings. Creating a repeating rock ‘n’ roll rhythm using traditional orchestral instruments, including harp and cello, I gave Spider-Man a very distinct sound. For pinnacle points of battle between Spider-Man and the robots, I reserved the use of choir voices.”
Gerard Marino is a celebrated video game composer. He has received numerous accolades for his work on God of War including the Interactive Game Award for Best Score and the Game Audio Network Guild’s “Music of the Year” Award. Marino’s orchestral suite for his theme from God of War debuted at the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl. This theme continues to be performed on over five continents, including two sold out performances by the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center. Gerard Marino’s other credits include contributing music to video games Fantastic 4 and The Punisher and orchestrating EA’s Medal of Honor: Rising Sun. Marino has also composed for film and television, including commercials for State Farm, the NBC 2006 Winter Olympics, and additional music for the award winning CW series Supernatural. His film credits include Amber Lake and El Padrino. In addition, Marino has scored film trailers for such notable works as I Am Legend and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.

THE MUSIC OF ‘DEXTER’ COMES ALIVE

Daniel Licht and Rolfe Kent perform original compositions from Showtime’s hit drama live for the first time with a special introduction from Michael C. Hall.

By: Kelly Payton

On June 10 at Largo at the Coronet, a very special musical event was held for Dexter. The concert featured composer Daniel Licht with special guest Rolfe Kent and an introduction from Dexter himself — Michael C. Hall. Hall told that he believes that the music plays a key role in the show. “I feel like it’s a fundamental part, as much as any character,” Hall said. “The aural landscape that is created, that Dan creates, that Rolfe creates with his main title music — it really sets the tone for us. It is as a fundamental part of the show as aesthetics.”
The event was small and casual, full of audience members that were enthralled in the music. The show featured abstract instruments such as a glockenspiel, theremin, knives, duct tape, wine glasses, saws, and scissors. More traditional instruments such as flutes, violins, guitars, cellos, mandolins, drums and violas were also used.
Licht is known for using unique instruments in his music. “I used a human femur which was an ancient Aztec instrument as a percussion instrument,” Licht told THR. He has also recorded with sacrificial drums.
Licht and his musicians played some of the more well known tracks from Dexter such as “Escalate,” “Truth/Birthday,” “Ice Truck” and what’s known as Licht’s Jaws: “Blood Theme.” New tracks such as “Long Way Home,” written about Lila from the second season, were featured as well.
The concert also premiered a song from the new Silent Hill: Book of Memories with Mary Elizabeth McGlynn and David Poe on vocals. The track, “Now We’re Free,” is an eerie addition to the video game accompanied by emotional vocals. The video game is set to come out this Halloween.
Film composer Kent made his appearance performing the opening theme, as well as “Remar” from the movie Reign Over Me. The end of the concert received a standing ovation.
It will be interesting to see what music the new season of Dexter brings. Licht said that in each season, there’s a new villain or love interest who brings a new series of sounds and a whole new language and themes. Licht uses different instruments for different people, but there’s always a basic musical core sound to the series. When asked about the music in the upcoming season, Licht said, “I don’t know, I don’t actually work on the show. I see it when they cut it. I don’t like to read the scripts so I am going to be surprised [by] what is going to happen. But I will try and make it exciting.”
Dexter fans will just have to wait to see what new music Licht brings to the seventh season, debuting on Sunday, Sept. 30 on Showtime.
Below is a set list of the performance. All pieces are from Dexter unless noted otherwise.
